Tomatoe Soup 2008

This is one of my favourite wall quilts.....called tomatoe soup, because the fabric colour combinations resemble tomatoe soup with cream swirls. Pearls are sewn along the ditch to help create a 3-D effect, and the centre four blocks form a triangle motif. Applique leavs and vines are meant to be the scraggy aftermath when tomatoe plants are near the end of growing. Love the softness of colours against the pearls and roses sewn into the four corners of centre square.

CREAM OF TOMATOE SOUP

(Cream of tomatoe soup should be soothing. Adding baking to the tomatoes keeps the milk from curdling)

5 Tbsp butter
1/2 cup chopped onion
4 Tbsp flour
4 cups milk( or 3 cups milk and 1 cup cream)
1 1/2 tsps sugar
pinch of salt to taste
1/2 tsp baking soda
3 cups chopped tomatoes, fresh or canned

Melt butter in a large pot, add onion and cook until clear. Sprinkle flour over the butter mixture and continue to cook a little longer.Add milk, sugar, and salt, and cook till slightly thickened.stir the baking soda into the tomatoes.Add the tomatoes to the milk, bring to a simmer.Remove from heat and put through a strainer, if you wish. Taste and correct seasonings. Do not freeze this. So good.
